{"id":182,"date":"2009-05-30T21:25:15","date_gmt":"2009-05-31T02:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/?p=182"},"modified":"2009-06-02T21:35:08","modified_gmt":"2009-06-03T02:35:08","slug":"big-laurel-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/?p=182","title":{"rendered":"Big Laurel Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big Laurel Falls is located deep into the Standing Indian area of the Nantahala National Forest.\u00a0\u00a0 If you drive in past the campground, across the creek and a few miles further on &#8211; the trailhead is along the right side of the road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-183\" title=\"bridge_at_betty_creek\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/bridge_at_betty_creek.jpg\" alt=\"Melanie on the bridge at Betty Creek\" width=\"391\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/bridge_at_betty_creek.jpg 391w, https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/bridge_at_betty_creek-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melanie on the bridge at Betty Creek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Melanie isn&#8217;t tired yet in this picture &#8211; the crossing of Betty Creek is only a few hundred yards into the hike but I couldn&#8217;t get her standing up and the stream under the bridge at the same time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a short (0.6 mile) and pleasant hike along a couple different streams to Big Laurel falls.\u00a0\u00a0 The falls themselves form a nice pool which one might consider swimming in if one is somehow immune to hypothermia.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s better later in the summer but even Trout wasn&#8217;t willing to stand in this one for too long.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-184\" title=\"big_laurel_falls\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/big_laurel_falls.jpg\" alt=\"Big Laurel Falls\" width=\"391\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/big_laurel_falls.jpg 391w, https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/big_laurel_falls-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big Laurel Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fairly easy rock scramble to get to the mid level of these falls but we&#8217;re probably supposed to mention that waterfalls are dangerous and you shouldn&#8217;t mess around with them.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t try this at home if you happen to have a 25 foot cascade at home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185\" style=\"width: 291px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185\" title=\"mooney_falls\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/mooney_falls.jpg\" alt=\"Mooney Falls\" width=\"291\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/mooney_falls.jpg 291w, https:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/mooney_falls-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mooney Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just a half mile or so further down the forest road from the Laurel Falls trailhead is a pull-off for Mooney Falls.\u00a0\u00a0 You should be able to see the falls off the south side of the road as you approach.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a couple switchbacks down to the river but the canyon is narrow and overgrown through here so it&#8217;s difficult to get a view of the entire cascade.\u00a0 This picture is probably less than half of the total drop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Big Laurel Falls is located deep into the Standing Indian area of the Nantahala National Forest.\u00a0\u00a0 If you drive in past the campground, across the creek and a few miles further on &#8211; the trailhead is along the right side of the road.
