{"id":37,"date":"2007-05-26T21:25:43","date_gmt":"2007-05-27T02:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/?p=37"},"modified":"2007-07-03T10:56:40","modified_gmt":"2007-07-03T15:56:40","slug":"buck-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/?p=37","title":{"rendered":"Buck Creek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re pretty much willing to do anything that involves messing about in rivers or streams, so it seemed worthwhile to spend a few hours on our way through Macon County hunting for garnets in Buck Creek.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/buck_creek.jpg\" title=\"Buck Creek\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/buck_creek.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Creek\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not really hunting.\u00a0 Generally if you reach into the silt along the river you&#8217;ll pull out a dozen or so, although they&#8217;ll be so small it&#8217;s hardly worth isolating them.\u00a0 Buck Creek is in Nantahala National Forest, just west of where US 64 crosses the Appalachian Trail.\u00a0 We spent about an hour or so fishing around for some big enough to save before we started to lose interest and just ended up playing around in the creek.\u00a0 Besides the garnets there is an old corundum mine on the hillside above the creek, and also some fairly large chunks of talc lying about the area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/garnets.jpg\" title=\"Garnets\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/garnets.jpg\" alt=\"Garnets\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a pile of almandine garnets we found.\u00a0 It&#8217;s traditional to include a coin in pictures like this to show scale but well, it&#8217;s more impressive if we don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re pretty much willing to do anything that involves messing about in rivers or streams, so it seemed worthwhile to spend a few hours on our way through Macon County hunting for garnets in Buck Creek.
