The peaks are quite noticeable from the Tennessee side of the park near US 441.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343\" style=\"width: 431px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/chimney_tops.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-343\" title=\"chimney_tops\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/chimney_tops.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/chimney_tops.jpg 431w, http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/chimney_tops-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of the Chimney Tops<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0The trail is about 2 miles with something like 1300 feet of elevation gain.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a constant climb although there are some very scenic river crossings along the way.\u00a0 There are good views of Mount Mingus and Mt. Le Conte.\u00a0\u00a0 The highlight of this trail though is the finale which is a rock climb to the top.\u00a0 There are signs warning of this at the trailhead but they don&#8217;t really show off the exposure of this rock face.\u00a0 Near the summit it becomes apparent just how much prominence there is to the west.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_344\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-344\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/summit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-344\" title=\"summit\" src=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/summit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/summit.jpg 437w, http:\/\/mrfs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/summit-269x300.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chimney Tops Summit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Probably less\u00a0 than 20% of people hiking up the trail actually climbed to the top.\u00a0 The views are good although honestly they aren&#8217;t all that much better than other nearby peaks.\u00a0\u00a0 There were about 10 other people on the summit which is relatively close to capacity.\u00a0 It does feature 360 degree views but it isn&#8217;t a very large area and there are couple of very exciting crevices to avoid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chimney Tops trail on the Tennessee side of the Smokies is a popular one with good reason.\u00a0\u00a0 This is actually the most crowded trail we&#8217;ve been on in a long time.
